Chest pain is a common symptom accounting for approximately 6% of hospital A&E visits. Many cases are minor, however the potential for serious and life threatening conditions mean that the majority of patients have a series of costly and time-consuming diagnostic tests. The innovative developments in CT technology with the introduction of the Aquilion ONE™provide the potential for an early diagnosis with a low radiation dose. Through detailed economic value modelling of the pathways in a large NHS Acute Trust, this paper shows that the introduction of the Aquilion ONE in the clinical pathway for the diagnosis of acute chest pain in an A&E setting also has the potential to reduce costs in the region of £0.3m to £1.7m depending on the systems usage within A&E and release capacity in the acute medical unit.
