20/10/08 - WELSH ASSEMBLY MINISTER OF HEALTH OPENS NEW SCANNER AT NEATH PORT TALBOT HOSPITAL

Health Minister, Edwina Hart marked a new era in diagnosis and treatment of patients in South West Wales when the new Toshiba MRI system was opened at Neath Port Talbot Hospital. Around 4,000 patients every year are expected to benefit from examinations by the new 1.5 scanner.

Minister of Health, Edwina Hart commented when opening the scanner "I am delighted to open this new facility which will greatly improve care for patients and illustrates the high level of investment that is being committed to provide a modern, fit-for-purpose healthcare service in Wales. The new MRI suite will further improve care for patients locally – particularly cancer patients and children – by reducing the need to travel for these important scans. This is in line with our aims of providing as many services as close to patients as possible."

The system, which is a Toshiba 1.5 Tesla Excelart Vantage ZGV with Atlas power upgrade, combines an ultra short bore of only 149 cm with a spacious bore aperture of 65.5 cm, providing a greater feeling of openness and comfort for the patient. It also comes with Toshiba’s patented Pianissimo technology, dramatically reducing acoustic noise, one of the most significant causes of discomfort during an MRI examination. Janine Sparkes, MR Superintendent Radiographer says, "We chose the Toshiba scanner primarily for its excellent quality images and its ability to allow access to claustrophobic and larger patients".

The unit features Toshiba’s Atlas coil concept, designed to improve workflow and efficiency. In order to reduce the disturbances in workflow caused by frequent coil exchange, Toshiba has developed technology for individual organ-specific coils, which allows for multiple coils to be connected simultaneously through coil connectors located at the head of the couch. Up to 128 elements can be connected simultaneously, and the system will read out only those the elements that are in the scan FOV. Through this design, the Atlas coils can remain on the couch for most applications, thus ensuring dramatic improvements in workflow. In addition, another feature of the Toshiba scanner utilised at Neath Port Talbot Hospital is the ability to undertake Renal Time- Slip scans. This technique visualises the Aorta and Renal arteries without the need for a Gadolinium contrast injection.

Neath Port Talbot Hospital has 270 beds and provides a range of inpatient, outpatient and day care services for the people of Neath and Port Talbot. The Hospital is part of the Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University NHS Trust and was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales on February 3, 2003.
